Yesterday, Shelley Miles came to CCU as a guest. She's from Canada but has lived in Tokyo for a little over a year. Her husband is a principal of a school. She talked to our class about her father-in-law, Frank Miles.
何ヶ月前に、Shelley Milesさんがゲストとして高３の授業である、CCU (Cross Cultural Understanding) にいらっしゃいました。カナダ出身ですが、東京に１年と少し住んでいらっしゃいます。旦那さんは校長先生です。Shelleyさんは私達に義父のFrank Milesさんの話をしてくださいました。
Frank was a Quaker who went to help people during the wars in China, around 1947. He was a 'conscientious observer'. That means that he disagreed with the war so he refused to fight, but wanted to go help the local people. Mostly Quakers are 'conscientious objectors', but really anyone can be.
Frankさんはクエーカーで１９４７年前後に戦時の中国で救援活動を行っていました。彼はいわば、「良心的兵役拒否」でした。これは、彼が戦争に反対で、戦闘に参加すること 拒んだものの、戦地の人々の助けになりたかったということを意味しています。多くのクエーカーは良心的兵役拒否でしたが、実際に行動にうつせる人はいませんでした。
Frank was 22 when he left for China. He met many different kinds of people there and helped to build hospitals, and to make prosthetic (fake or false body parts that are made from wood or plastic) limbs for bomb victims.

It was really interesting to hear his story and to see all the old photographs. It really made us think about how we react to war or fighting. Quakers do a lot of good work around the world - I hope we can continue to help them.
