October 11th, was International Day of the Girl Child. It's a day set up by the United Nations which tries to draw attention to girls' and women's rights around the world. We are lucky here in Japan that for the most part we are not discriminated against or deprived of our basic rights. In many countries in the world, usually developing countries, many girls aren't allowed to go to school - they are denied the right to education. In some countries girls under the age of 18 are forced to get married to much older men - they are denied their right to have a safe childhood.

The UN is trying to make changes and there's a lot of good work being done. However, it may take up to 100 years to get rid of inequality between girls and boys. I think that it's easy for someone like us, who are living very comfortably, to stand idly by - to think there's nothing we can do.

This isn't true though, there is something we can do. We can teach our children that this inequality exists and educate them as to why it is so. We can help them to spread the message of equality and hopefully that message may reach the communities where girls are having a hard time. It may help to educate those communities to a point where they understand that boys and girls should have equal rights, and responsibilities.
Translated by R.K 中2
