Yesterday, at English lunch I talked with a few 9th grade students about tax. We started talking about it because one girl, Ms. Y, said she really wanted to visit Finland or Norway because the tax there is high. I was confused because I didn't think people wanted to pay more tax. She said that because it's different from Japan, she wants to see how it changes life.

『私は消費税が高いフィンランドやノルウェーに行きたい』
という中学3年生のYさんの言葉をきっかけに私達は消費税について話し合いました。私は消費税を払いたいという人がいることに衝撃を受けました。彼女は、日本とはまた違う、消費税が生活にどんな影響を与えているのか知りたいと話していました。

Soon tax in Japan will rise from 8% to 10%. The 9th grade students had different opinions about this. One girl said it wasn't good because it means she has less money to spend. Her parents won't increase her allowance to match tax. The other two girls said it was ok because Japan still has lower tax than many other Asian or European countries.
消費税の8%から10%への上昇について、中学3年生の生徒からは様々な意見が出たようです。ある一人の生徒は、消費税が上がるからといって自分のお小遣いも増えるわけではないので買えるものがなくなってしまうから反対、他二人の生徒は、日本の消費税は他のアジアやヨーロッパと比べてまだ低い方だから悪くはない、と意見を述べていました。
All three girls said that Japan will probably use the money from higher tax to help old people. The low birth rate is a big problem in Japan now, and everyone agrees that we need to do something to help older people.
そして三人とも日本はきっと、増税で得たお金をお年寄りのために使うだろうなと考えていました。日本は今、「少子化」という大問題を抱えていますが、中学3年生はみんなお年寄りを助けることが必要だと思っています。
